Don’t Let Addictions Control Your Life

By definition, addiction means, the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that it causes severe trauma.

There are many different kinds of addiction. Examples include: alcohol, drugs, porn, gambling, on-line, shopping, etc…

First you must decide if you have an addiction, and the best way to decide that is to start paying attention, really start paying attention.

Do you choose drugs over time with your family? Do you spend every penny you earn on clothes or shoes? If after truly looking at yourself you decide that yes you do have an addiction you have taken the second step, acceptance.

Next, you must decide to take action, to stop letting your addiction control your life. You must choose life, over the path of self-destruction you are surely on. You can do this, but you will need something to motivate yourself.

Try honestly looking at what you are doing and understand that it is getting worse not better and all you are doing is hurting yourself, every day you continue to allow your addiction to control you. And although you shouldn’t change for anyone but yourself, if you also look at the people who love you, you are hurting them too.

Now that you have chosen life, how do you take the control back? Part of what got you into trouble in the first place is that you weren’t happy with your life for some reason on some level. So take another look at who you have become and what got you to where you are.

And it really all comes down to how you feel about yourself. You used your addiction to fill some hole in your life, some part of you that either you didn’t feel good about or felt empty.

And you also have to be willing to give up the control you have been trying to maintain for so long. You have to surrender the control and ask for help. You need help from someone or some kind of program. The person or program will be able to help you come up with a plan of action. Then, you have to be willing to accept and follow the plan you have chosen.

Things that will be included in that plan will be to: weed out any and all negative influences, including people, change everything, taking it one day at a time, and set some goals, attainable ones.

It is also important to remember, not to get too excited too early. It will be amazing when you have walked away from your addiction for one day, 1 week, etc… but in order to stay away from your addiction it has to work long term.

Finally, an addiction is not something to brag about and neither is stopping that addiction. You never want to glamorize your addiction or your walking away from it. You don’t want your mind to ever think for one moment that your addiction was a good thing, because it was not and ever will be.
