How to Change Your Life by Changing Your Motivation Style

Do you find that you tend to procrastinate sometimes? Or maybe you find you are not as productive as you would like to be?

We all have activities that we don’t like doing and it can be very easy to continually put them off, but then we feel guilty because we haven’t gotten done, then we feel bad about ourselves.

And all that does is create a bunch of negative energy that then makes us feel even less like doing the activity we have already been putting off.

Are you getting the vicious cycle that happens here? Not a good one that is for sure. So, let’s talk about some ways to break the cycle. You can change your life by changing how you get motivated.

One way to get motivated is by taking the task you have been putting off and breaking it up into several smaller tasks. OK don’t panic, I know it sounds like you just gave yourself more work, but in the bigger picture it will take less time.

You see, by breaking it into smaller tasks it seems less daunting, so you are more willing to do it. Then you get to feel a sense of accomplishment sooner because you will be able to complete a part faster than the whole, giving you more motivation to keep going.


Next, do not worry about being perfect. Once you get started, you will be able to go back and fix it if you need to, but the goal here is to get started. So, get it done and then make corrections if necessary.

Another way is to find a friend or co-worker to be not only as a person to be supportive, but also as a motivator. We tend to be more productive if we have to be accountable to someone. So by having someone who knows what you should be working on you will be more likely to get it done.

A fourth way is to figure out what time of the day you are the most productive and do the most difficult task when you have the most energy. If you are a morning person, don’t save a 20 page paper for 10pm at night.

The next way is to put the most daunting tasks at the top of your list, and actually start from the top of your list, and no cheating, because you are just cheating yourself.

Another way is to stay focused on the end result. Getting exercise into your schedule is not easy every day, but if you want to lose 10 lbs. for your school reunion in 6 weeks, keep focused on how you will feel at the end. It will be worth feeling good about you at the reunion.

It is not easy to stop procrastinating and get motivated, but if you want to know how to change your life, use some of the ways to break the cycle of not being productive, and you will get those difficult tasks done, feel good about yourself and be motivated to keep going. So, start today, pick a task you have been putting off, tell a friend that you are going to get it done, and go for it!
