Life Coaching Certification – Fact or Fiction
Thinking about hiring a life coach? Should you hire one that is certified? What does it mean if a life coach has
I don’t know about you, but when I hear someone is certified I just naturally feel like that person must know
more than someone who is not.
But what is important to know right off the bat is that, that is not necessarily true about many things,
including life coaching certification.
But I will leave the decision up to you. You decide if the certification is fact or fiction. Does it make the
life coach better at his/her job?
To start us off, there is no FDA of life coaches. There is no governing body requiring life coaches to have any
type of certification. What that means is that any credentials the life coach you want to hire may have means
nothing to you. You have no reference to compare one set of credentials to another.
OK let’s put that aside for a moment and just talk about what these certification programs offer. So what does a
certification program offer exactly? Well that is the next piece to think about. You see, different programs offer
So, one life coach might have more skill in one area, while another life coach
who took a different program may have more skill in a different area. That makes it rather hard to decide if one is
better than another.
So if having credentials doesn’t really help you, why would someone want them? Well, just like anyone else, it
is more for self-validation. They want someone to recognize their skills and abilities. The desire for
certification shows a lack of self-confidence.
Now, let’s go the other way. Let’s look at a life coach with no credentials. How would you even begin to decide
who might be potentially a good match for you? Well, one could argue that a person truly meant to be a coach will
have a natural gift to coach clients. And in talking with them you will feel that emanate from them.
You will feel the self-confidence and the
positive energy that they must possess in order to be good at what they do. You can also ask for references. Talk
to other people they have worked with and see what they experienced with them.
Well, there you have it a look at both ends of the spectrum. We looked at a life coach with a certification and
what that means, and we looked at a life coach without any type of certification and what that means.
So, having that knowledge now, you will need to decide what is important to you, and what you are looking for
and decide if the life coach you hire should or should not have some type of certification.
Just remember the facts; no one requires certification, also keeping in mind the fiction; you do not have to
have certification to be good at being a life coach. So, ultimately you have to decide if a life coaching
certification is what you want your life coach to have.
