Tips for Managing Change

I don’t know about you, but I am not a big fan of change, which is kind of silly since life is all about change.

You can fight it, hate it and run from it, but it will still happen, things in life are always changing. If you want to survive life’s changes you better learn how to deal with, adapt to and to even enjoy the changes that come your way.

Below are some tips for managing the changes that come into your world.

Don’t fight. I tend to be a stubborn person, but even I have learned that the more you fight something the worse it gets. You may not want to move to a different desk, but by refusing to do it all you do is irritate your boss.

And in the end, guess what, yep you still have to move except that now your boss is pissed making your world even worse. The sooner you accept the change the more smoothly the transition will be.

Look for the silver lining. Back to the moving your desk example. You may not want to move desks, but then you realize it gets you away from a co-worker that drives you nuts. So, you may still not be thrilled about it, but if you look for something good about it, it makes the move easier.

Learn and adapt quickly. The faster you adapt to the new changes the less time you will be uncomfortable. If you are getting new computer software, read about it and when it arrives spend time learning it so you can utilize any of the new features.

Take it one at a time. Life is full of changes, but if you try to handle several all at once you will get overwhelmed, get frustrated and fall back into your old routine of just refusing to deal with it. Remember change is not easy. Although it is important to learn how to deal with change we also have to remember, sometimes change is not easy and can be very frustrating, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Just do your best and ask for help along the way if you need it.

Take control. The reason most people resist change is because they feel like they are not in control of the situation. So, the best solution to that problem is to take the control back by making it work for you.

Take the challenge of the change head on, putting the power back into your hands, and when you overcome the challenge the next time you come across the next change you will feel more prepared to handle it.

Don’t get comfy. You have now overcome your latest challenge of change, but don’t get so relaxed that you forget there will be another change heading your way soon. So, be mentally prepared for that, so that it doesn’t catch you off guard this time allowing you to adapt to the change more easily.
